Biography

Established 1930, one of the earliest film societies in UK. The Guild is credited with the establishment of the Edinburgh Film Festival in 1947 (becoming Edinburgh International Film Festival). At that time Guild was based in Hill Street, subsequently moving to Randolph Crescent where it is credited with setting up the Edinburgh Film Theatre, later to be known as Filmhouse, on it and the Guild’s move in 1978 to the Lothian Road site. Founder members H Forsyth Hardy and Norman Wilson founded the international magazine of film criticism Cinema Quarterly in the early 1930’s.
