Biography

Peter Hodgkiss was born in Leeds in 1936 but spent most of his life in Glasgow. He was a keen sportsman, with interests in rowing and cycling and a lifelong passion for mountaineering. In 1985, with Jack Baines (who died in 1996), Hodgkiss set up the Ernest Press specialising in mountain and mountaineering publications. The Ernest Press received much acclaim as the publisher of four winners of the Boardman Tasker Prize for mountain literature. It was also noted as the publisher of numerous guidebooks and journals for various mountaineering clubs and latterly for its Mountain Biking guidebooks.
