Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The rector of Booton, Whitwell Elwin (1816-1900), was also a prolific writer. He produced works on Alexander Pope, John Forster and Lord Byron, as well as being a frequent contributor to the 'Quarterly Review', becoming editor of that periodical from 1853-1860. He also acted as a literary advisor to John Murray, including advising Murray that he should not publish 'On the Origin of Species' by Charles Darwin, but suggesting that Darwin should consider writing a book about pigeons...

The manuscript has been annotated, "Copied out by Col. W. Napiers Lady". Included are three maps, in manuscript, of battle plans.

Also included is a letter, 27 December 1901, of J.B. Hughes relating an anecdote about Napier; and a newspaper cutting, "Napier`s `Peninsular War`", from "The Times", 29 March 1928.

Two articles on Charles Napier, with an article on William Napier, all by Whitwell Elwin and each extracted from the "Quarterly Review". The pages have been revised by Elwin., ? 1857-? 1864.
