Biography

Charles George MacDowall was born in Langside, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on the 25th August 1890, to Charles MacDowall (1859-1948), OBE (1920), Railway Manager (Glasgow and South Western Railways) and Helen MacDowall (nee Downie) (1858-). Charles was educated at Hutcheson’s Grammar School, Glasgow.

In 1908 Charles went to the University of Glasgow to study for an MA. He took a range of subjects including: English, History, Latin, Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. He graduated in 1913. Charles had also undertaken classes - Engineering Field Work, Geology, Economic Science and Veterinary Hygiene - for a BSc (Agriculture) and passed most of his exams before enlisting in 1915. His brother, Edward Gillies MacDowall, had enlisted in 1914, and was killed in action on the 17th May 1915.

Charles was also a member of the OTC at the University, and was appointed temporary 2nd Lieutenant, and then promoted to Lieutenant in 1917. Lieutenant MacDowall was severely wounded while with the 8th Bn. Black Watch, losing a leg.

After the war, Charles returned to the University in 1918 to resit one examination but withdrew, possibly due to the nature if his injuries, thus not completing his degree. He went on to practice as a Chartered Accountant, became Town Clerk of Fortrose (31 years) and served as Provost of Fortrose and Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty. Charles married Dora Eleanor Henderson and had 2 sons. He died on the 14th July 1968, aged 77, in Fortrose and is buried alongside his wife Dora, who died on the 9th July 1975 (aged 88), also in Fortrose.
