Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Whitwell Elwin and the publishing house of John Murray had a close connection over the second half of the 19th century. Not only was Elwin a Murray author, he was also the editor of the 'Quarterly Review' for seven years. A large and thorough correspondence has survived, detailing their relationship and many issues concerning Elwin, Murray and the 'Quarterly Review'. The letters here are mostly of Elwin to John Murray [III], although there are some other letters of, to or concerning Elwin...

Scope and Contents

Peter Cunningham was born at Pimlico in 1816, the third son of Allan Cunningham. He was educated at Christ's Hospital, London and in 1834 obtained a position in the audit office, from which he retired in 1860. He published many works including 'Handbook of Westminster Abbey' (1842); 'Handbook of London' (1849); 'Story of Nell Gwyn' (1852). He also contributed to various periodicals including the 'Illustrated London News' and "Gentleman's Magazine". Cunningham died in 1869.
