Scope and Contents

The excerpts are from the following:

(i) Scottish sources, including ‘System of heraldry, speculative and practical’ by Alexander Nisbet (Edinburgh, 1722-1742), ‘Annals of Scotland’ by David Dalrymple (Edinburgh, 1776-1779), and ’History of the House of Douglas’ by David Hume of Godscroft (Edinburgh, 1643) (folio 1);

(ii) English sources, including ‘Holinshed’s Chronicles’ (London, 1577) and ’Foedera’ by Thomas Rymer (London, 1704-1713), with a biography of Arabella Stuart (folio 94);

(iii) French sources, including ‘Histoire abbregée’ by David Chambers, Lord Ormond (Paris, 1579), ‘Recueil des Rois de France’ by Jean Du Tillet (Paris, 1566), and ’Histoire de Berry’ by Gaspard Thaumas de la Thaumassière (Bourges, 1689) (folio 231).
