The letter-books contain drafts and copies, in various hands, of letters and minutes written by Stuart or by his aide-de-camp, mostly on official business, and including copies of some letters written to him.

Arrangement
The letter-books are in at least five partially overlapping series, identified by numbers or letters on the covers. Many of the volumes have more than one identifying number or letter, but the series appears to be as follows:
MSS.8355-8367. An alphabetical series marked A to O, B and I are missing.
MSS.8368-8371. Part of a numerical series marked 7 to 10 (the earlier part of this series may be formed by some volumes of the previous alphabetical series, which are also numbered).
MSS.8372-8373. Part of an alphabetical series marked x and y.
MSS.8374-8387. A numerical series marked 1 to 13, book 7 being in two parts.
MSS.8388-8399. An alphabetical series marked A to L, with two volumes marked G and the mark J omitted.
The internal order of the letters is roughly chronological, but several letters are duplicated in more than one book.
Other Finding Aids
Apart from MS.8354, each volume contains lists of contents, some of them incomplete.
