Identifier: MS.5528

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Having taken up his post as Chargé d'Affaires in Madrid, Robert Liston was, in May 1783, appointed Minister Plenipotentiary on Lord Mountstuart being ordered to Sweden.

The main themes of his reports home were: the strength of the Family Compact; the constant endeavours of Spain to retrieve Gibraltar; and the negotiations for the removal of British settlers from the Mosquito shore. Liston's constant pressure eventually resulted in an amicable settlement on the settler issue, but his attempts to induce Spain to sign a commercial treaty with Britain were unsuccessful.
