Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

The series of diaries, written in India and Burma, begins in January 1854, and continues in sequence until 1880, with only the volume for the year 1873 missing. After a brief period in the hospital at Bassein in Burma, Oswald was posted in September 1854 in charge of the hospital at Shemogah in Mysore. Apart from a visit on leave to England in 1859, he remained there until 1865. The diaries for this period describe both his social life, including hunting expeditions, and his professional work, including operations and the use of vaccination, chloroform and the microscope. From June 1865 until 1876 Oswald held the appointment of Government Surgeon in Bangalore and the diaries reflect a routine social and professional life within the European community there. This was broken by a period of leave from 1869-1871 which he spent in England and Germany. He returned through France after the cessation of hostilities in the Franco-Prussian War. In 1876 he was appointed Surgeon-General of Burma; he made frequent tours of inspection through Burma, and visited Penang and Singapore, describing his journeys in the diaries. In 1879 he returned to India to take up his appointment as Acting Surgeon-General at Madras.
