Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows:

(i) Manuscript, undated, entitled 'On teaching poetry', being the text of a lecture delivered to a group of teachers at some time during Sir Herbert Grierson's tenure (1894-1915) of the Chair of English at Aberdeen (folio 1);

(ii) Manuscript, undated of part of a bibliography of the works of Thomas Hardy compiled by R B H Thomson and presumably in his hand (folio 27);

(iii) Manuscript, 1916, entitled 'Shakespeare Centenary Address' (folio 42);

(iv) A fragmentary typescript, undated, entitled 'The University of Aberdeen', which appears to be part of an autobiographical work, and which may possibly be a draft of an article in the series 'Some memories' which Grierson contributed to ‘The Scots Review’ in 1947 (folio 103);

(v) Manuscript, undated, entitled 'A study of the imagery of John Donne' (folio 108);

(vi) Notes, undated, for a lecture entitled 'The Roman element in our language and literature' (folio 125);

(vii) Manuscript notes, undated, on the history and development of the English novel (folio 182);

(viii) Page of manuscript notes, undated, apparently on the poetry of Byron (folio 232).
