Music book of Lady Jean Campbell., [Circa 1640.]
Scope and Contents
Lady Jean Campbell married George Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure, in 1645. This book was presumably compiled before her marriage, possibly, on account of the similarity of the musical hands in this book and in MS.9447, under the influence of Duncan Burnett. It contains eight pieces for virginal, including two attributed to Orlando [?Gibbons], followed by forty-three pieces in French lute tablature. The only composer named is 'Goutier' (i.e. Gautier). See an unpublished dissertation by Evelyn Stell, 1987 (MS.22999). The 'almayne' on folio 4 is number 9 in ‘Early Scottish keyboard music’.
