While in Paris, Sir James Hall attended meetings of the Assemblée Nationale and of the Jacobin Club almost every day, and he gives an account of the questions discussed there and of the atmosphere of tension among the people of Paris during the early stages of the Revolution. Hall seems to have been a friend of Condorcet, and names of other statesmen of the period such as Mirabeau, Robespierre, Danton, Guizot, and Sieyès are prominent in the journal. Each volume contains a brief guide to some of the topics discussed. Each paragraph, in all the volumes of this series, is marked with a letter indicating its contents, e.g. 'P' for politics, 'M' for manners and character, etc.; MS.6329 has an index of the meaning of these letters at folio viii. The main text appears mostly on the recto, the verso of each folio being reserved for comments, addenda, and drawings.
