Main series of land titles relating to the Oliphants of Gask., 12th century-1795.

 Sub-Series
Identifier: Ch.B.1353-1634

Scope and Contents

The Gask family, a cadet branch of the Lords Oliphant, acquired most of their lands by purchase from Laurence, Lord Oliphant (succeeded 1593), so that their charter-chest contained many deeds of the senior branch, relating mainly to south Perthshire (baronies of Aberdalgie, Dupplin, and Gask, and bailiery of Inchaffray) and Caithness. The earliest is a charter of William the Lion; there are four each of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries; these nine are kept in a wooden chest made for them by the family. By 1625 Lord Oliphant had sold most of his estates, and thereafter the deeds relate principally to the Gask family. The latest deeds, of the second half of the eighteenth century, concern the repurchase of the estate after its forfeiture in the `45.
