Biographies of Christian authors written by Joannes Petri de Delft, a copyist at Niewlicht., 1457-1469.

 File
Identifier: MS.7140

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Contents list, written last, in a different hand from the rest of the volume (folio 1 verso), and cumulative index of names (folio 2) dated 1469. The first entry for each letter is introduced by an initial in blue or red, alternately.

(ii) St Jerome, 'De Viris Illustribus' (folio 13); the text is almost the same as that printed in 'Patrologia Latina', volume xxiii, 602-720, with only a few minor differences of vocabulary and word order. At the end (folio 59 verso) is a note stating that this section was completed on the Vigil of St Thomas (presumably 20 December), 1461; folio 60 is blank but ruled.

(iii) Sigebert of Gembloux, 'De Scriptoribus Ecclesiasticis' (folio 61); the text is very largely that printed in 'Patrologia Latina', volume clx, 547-588, the principal differences being: the omission of most of the article on Bede (folio 76); the addition of an article on Angisius, Abbot of Lobbes (folio 79 verso); and supplementary biographical notes in the margins of folios 74, 78 verso, 79, 79 verso, and 80 verso. At the end (folio 97 verso) is the copyist's note stating that this section was completed on the Vigil of Saints Peter and Paul (28 June), 1461. A number of biographical notes on twelfth- and thirteenth-century authors have been added (some in another hand) at folios 97 verso-101; folios 102-104 are blank but ruled.

(iv) Isidore of Seville, 'De Viris Illustribus' (folio 105); this manuscript contains the short version of the text, which omits most of the first fourteen chapters of that printed in 'Patrologia Latina' volume lxxxiii, 1081-1106. The various readings quoted in the critical edition of Carmen Codoñer Merino, "El 'De Viris Illustribus' de Isidoro de Sevilla" (Salamanca, 1964), suggest that this manuscript derives (if indirectly) from Montpellier, Faculty of Medicine, MS.406. No completion date is given.

(v) Gennadius of Marseilles,'De Scriptoribus Ecclesiasticis'(folio 119); the text is very largely that printed in 'Patrologia Latina', volume lviii, 1059-1120, omitting the introductory article on St Jerome, and that on Honoratus of Marseilles. At the end (folio 153 verso) is a note stating that this section was completed in Advent 1457.

In each section, each article is numbered in red, and is introduced by an initial in blue or red alternately.
