 File
Identifier: MS.7141

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) A copy written in a fourteenth-century English hand of the 'Institutions', as far as Book III, Title 11 (folio 1). The text is accompanied by a full gloss and further annotations in different hands. It contains Lombardic initials in red in both text and gloss, and underlinings in red in the gloss. The leaf following folio 1 (containing Title 2, Section 3 to Title 5, Section 3) and the bifolium following folio 16 (containing Title 11, Section 1 to Title 14, Section 1) have been torn out. A leaf is missing after folio 24.

(ii) A copy written in a thirteenth-century hand of the 'Digest', from Book L, Title 17, Section 100 to the end (folio 33). Each phrase of the text is followed by the gloss. The initials of each section are alternately in red and blue. There are a few notes written in the margins. The marginal note at folio 41 verso indicates that this section was in England in the fourteenth century. Some of the leaves are damaged.

(iii) A copy written in an early thirteenth-century hand, probably ltalian, of the 'Codex', from Book X, Title 1 to the end (folio 42). It is accompanied by a full gloss as far as folio 43 and by numerous annotations as far as folio 57 verso, written about 1300 in an English hand. There are also further marginal notes in various hands on most of the leaves after folio 43. The initials in the text and in the gloss, and the underlinings in the gloss, are in red. The bifolium following folio 65 (containing Book Xll, Title 19, Section 12, to Title 24, Section 7) has been torn out. The leaf following folio 71 has been cut out, without loss of text. At the end is a blank leaf (folio 75), which may have been part of the original binding.
