Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Correspondence, 1799-1914, chiefly from Thomas Smith, when a missionary in Calcutta, to his sister, Catherine, wife of Thomas Smith, tenant in Libberton. Smith's letters deal mainly with family affairs but include some comments on life in India, the disruption of 1843, the effect of the Corn Laws, and the Indian Mutiny. The miscellaneous correspondence includes a letter to Smith from Alexander Duff, the missionary. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Legal documents, 1790-1833, chiefly concerning John Smith, tenant in Libberton. (Folio 34.)
