Scope and Contents

The treatise is divided into three parts.

(a) Fifteen chapters with the title 'Quhat is mensural music', containing examples of twenty-five canons with resolutions. This section is called 'the secund part of Music', and it may therefore be presumed that an earlier volume was written by the same author. (Folio 1.)

(b) 'Music Mensurall', beginning with five chapters on counterpoint and followed by examples of harmony in three, four and five parts. (Folio 90.)

(c) Unfinished section dealing with proportion in five chapters. (Folio 225.)

Custodial History

The photostat was bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund.

Bought, 1949.

Existence and Location of Originals

The original manuscript was presented in 1635 by Sir Francis Kingston to his newly-founded Musaeum Minervae, and in 1778 by Sir John Hawkins to the British Museum.
