Scope and Contents

The volume is entitled `Veterum Diplomatum Collectio Partim ex ipsis Autographis Partim ex probatis Apographis Transcripta Vol: II. Impensis Walteri Macfarlane De Eodem MDCCLVIII`, and written by Macfarlane`s later copyist.

The transcripts from which Macfarlane had copies made were amongst the papers of Richard Augustine Hay (Adv.MSS.35.4.16-35.4.17) which passed to him after Hay`s death. The contents are:

The cartulary of Soutra (folio 1), transcribed from the original, now Adv.MS.34.4.1.

The cartulary of Coldstream (folio 41), transcribed from Hay`s copy (Adv.MS.35.4.16, folios 107-114, now incomplete, copied in folios 56-77 verso) of the original, now British Museum, Harl.MS. 6670.

Charters of Holyrood (folio 79) transcribed from Hay`s copy (Adv.MS.35.4.16, folios 131-142 verso, now incomplete, copied in folios 79-135 verso) from an unidentified source (printed from this copy in ‘Liber Cartarum Sancte Crucis’, Appendix).

Charters of Beauly (folio 196) from an unidentified source (printed from this copy in ‘The Charters of the Priory of Beauly’.

A miscellany of charters and other papers (folio 233), some at least of which were copied from Hay`s transcripts (Adv.MS.35.4.16, folios 115-128 verso, copied (with omissions) in folios 239-271 verso) and from unidentified sources (one of these copies, `Information for Lord Torphichen’ (folio 242) was printed from this copy as the first item in ‘Tempiaria’).

Lists for the first two sections precede each, and for the last three are placed at the end; the first also has an index of names.
