Custodial History

The letters passed from the Mures of Rowallan into the possession of the Earls of Loudoun by the marriage in 1720 of Jean, grand-daughter of William Mure of Rowallan, to Sir James Campbell of Lawers, father of the 5th Earl of Loudoun. The letters were presented to the Advocates’ Library in 1925 by 350 subscribers to a fund promoted by Dr Walter Seton of Abercorn, Honorary Lecturer in Scottish History, University College, London, and Dr Charles Stewart Black, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York; it was arranged that the principal subscribers should have associated with them certain letters, as follows: Number 4 (folio 7), letter, 1565, of Mary Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley: Messr. John Walker and Company, Dunfermline. Number 6 (folio 11), letter, 1569, of Mary Queen of Scots: The City of Edinburgh. Number 7 (folio 15), letter, 1568, of Mary Queen of Scots: The Right Honourable Lord Glendyne. Number 10 (folio 19), letter, 1568, of Mary Queen of Scots: The Right Honourable Lord Glentanar. Number 11 (folio 21), letter, 1568, of Mary Queen of Scots: Messr. William Crawford and Company, Edinburgh. Number 12 (folio 23), letter, 1568, of Mary Queen of Scots: F M Sabin, Esquire, London.
