Scope and Contents
The contents of the manuscript are as follows:
(i) `Righ og Easaidh ruagh`, the manuscript of the Gaelic tale transcribed by Hector MacLean, schoolmaster at Ballygrant, Islay, and Campbell`s principal collector and collaborator, from the recitation of James Wilson, a blind fiddler on the island, 1859. Printed in ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 1, pages 12-18. (Folio 3.)
(ii) A version of `Righ og Easaidh ruagh` as transcribed by Hector Urquhart, gamekeeper on Ardkinglas estate, from John Campbell, Strath Gairloch, in Urquhart`s native district, 1859. An abstract, with variants from the Islay version, is in ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 1, pages 18-21. (Folio 8.)
(iii) Proof of `Righ og Easaidh ruagh`, heavily corrected by Campbell. (Folio 19.)
(iv) Textual notes and English version of `Righ og Easaidh ruagh`, including a corrected proof (folios 36a-36g) of Campbell’s text. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 1, pages 1-11. (Folio 21.)

(viii) `Ursgeal na Feannaig` (The Tale of the Hoodie Crow), English and Gaelic versions and notes, 1859-1860, with corrected proofs of part of the former (folio 104) and of the entire text of the latter (folio 112). ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 1, pages 63-70. The Gaelic tale, collected by Hector MacLean, is attributed in ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’ to Ann MacGilvray, Islay; an earlier attribution (folio 99) by Campbell to Catherine Milloy in Kilmeny, Islay, is excised on folio 108.
