Scope and Contents

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) The manuscript, much amended, of parts of the Ossian essay extending from ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 68-81 (folios 1-18); pages 99-113 (folios 19-44); pages 117-123 (folios 45-57). Some mis-arrangement in the order of folios in the original binding has been corrected. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Page proofs and (from folio 68) some earlier proofs interspersed with extensive manuscript additions, of `Postscript` and part of `Ossian`. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 1-67. (Folio 58.)

(iii) Fragments of text (‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, parts of pages 71, 74, 77, 92-96) filling some lacunae in section (i), above. (Folio 78.)

(iv) The text of `Postscript`, ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 1-4 (folios 83-88), and another large section of the Ossianic essays, corresponding to ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 5-37, 40-41, 45-46, 51-52, 60-67 (folios 89-132). The manuscript lacks some additional matter included in the final ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’ text. (Folio 83.)

(v) Part of Hector MacLean`s manuscript for John Francis Campbell, with editorial excisions and additions by the latter, of the former`s `On the Gaelic Poetry of Known and Unknown Bards, Published and Traditional`, from MacLean`s piece on William Ross to the end of the essay. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 185-215. (vi) A letter of John Dewar to Campbell, 28 October 1861, with a note by the latter. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, 215-216. (Folio 156.)

(vii) The text of Campbell`s concluding remarks on the Ossian issue. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 248-252. (Folio 158.)

(viii) A long series of manuscript sections, mingled with sections and leaves of corrected and amended proofs representing together a text corresponding more closely to the final version of the Ossian essays. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 23-37, 40-42, 45-46, 50-56, 59-83, 92-113, 115-122, 128-151, 155-160. (Folio 162.) This section is continued in Adv.MS.50.1.6(Part 2).
