Scope and Contents

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(xii) A manuscript entitled ‘Rough draught: Postscript’, considerably longer than the piece of that title in ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 1-4, and containing material re-worked for later essays; dated at end (folio 466 verso), 25 June [18]61. (Folio 411.)

(xiii) Corrected proofs, many cut and pasted and marked by John Francis Campbell with the instruction for the printer ‘correct and make up’ or ‘make up’, with some additional sections in manuscript. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 1-83, 87-364, 365-407, passim. The last section in particular was greatly amended and expanded in the final ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’ text. (Folio 467.)

(xiv) Parts of two letters of Campbell’s collector Donald K Torrie to the former giving his opinion on the authenticity of Ossianic verse. Folios 596-597 is the second half of the letter of 19 October 1861 in ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 217-221. (Folio 596.)

(xv) The original letter, 9 November 1861, containing the response of Archibald Sinclair, Gaelic publisher in Glasgow, on the same subject. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4, pages 221-229. (Folio 601.)

(xvi) The letter of Alexander Carmichael, compiler of ‘Carmina Gaedelica’, Skye, 28 November 1861, with a lengthy opinion on the same subject (folios 607-645), followed by an uncorrected early proof (folios 646-652) of the letter. ‘Popular Tales of the West Highlands’, 4. pages 229-247.
