Scope and Contents

The catches (folios 2-9, 15-15 verso) all appear in one or other of the editions of ‘The Musical Companion’. Composers include William and Henry Lawes, John Hilton, Edmund Nelham, and W[?alter] P[?orter].

The following songs have been identified:

`Where are all thy beauties` by Thomas Campian, in ‘First Book of Ayres’ (folio 9 verso).

`My love bound me` by Robert Jones, in ‘Second Book of Songs’; also in Adv.MS.5.2.14, folio 4 verso (folio 9 verso).

`Go to bed sweet muse` by Robert Jones, in ‘Ultimum Vale’, (folio 10).

`Do not O do not prize thy beauty` by Robert Jones, in ‘Ultimum Vale’; also in Adv.MS.5.2.14, folio 5 (folio 10 verso).

`What is all this world` by John Attey, in ‘First Booke of Ayres’ (folio 10 verso).

`As by the streame of Babylon`, by Thomas Campian, in ‘First Book of Ayres’ (folio 11).

`Beauty sat bathing`, by Robert Jones, in ‘Ultimum Vale’ (words by Anthony Munday) (folio 13).

`What shall I do`, by Henry Purcell, in ‘Dioclesian’ (folio 17).

‘Celia that I once was blest’, by Henry Purcell.

Two of the songs have been published (though not from this source) in ‘Music of Scotland, 1500-1700’:

‘Even death behold I breath` (words by Alexander Montgomerie) (folio 12).

`Hollow my fancy` (with different words) (folio 14).
