Miscellaneous vellum and paper fragments from various sources., 15th century, 18th century, ?20th century.

Identifier: Adv.MS.84.1.27

Scope and Contents

The fragments are as follows:

(i)-(vi) Six small fragments of vellum, of which five appear to come from the same source, which may be a large service-book, such as a breviary, of 15th-century French provenance, although not one recorded in ‘Patrologia Graeca’. Not enough of the text is visible for any certain identification to be made. Of these five fragments, three are largely blank, having been cut from the inner margin of the leaf or leaves: portions of large red initials are visible, but only a few letters of the text are present; the other two contain larger portions of the text, including some rubricated initials. The sixth fragment contains writing in a quite different hand but not enough can be read to indentify its source.

The fragments were recovered from the binding of a copy (pressmark NE.775.h.13) of ‘Ecclesiasticae Historiae Autores’ (Basileae, 1557) by Eusebius, where they had been used to strengthen the spine.

(vii)-(viii) Two modern paper fragments formerly loosely inserted in ‘Ecclesiasticae Historiae Autores’ (Basileae, 1557). One, (vii), is a tiny scrap of paper containing writing in German in an 18th-century hand; the other, (viii), is a sheet of paper containing a note on St Peter in Rome written in English in a hand probably of the 20th century.
