Scope and Contents

The volume consists of pages i-xxiv, 1-38 of ‘A Summary of all the Religious Houses in England and Wales’ (folio 1) bearing Lieutenant-General G H Hutton`s signature on the title page, but no other marks, together with page 411, and what follows, of ‘Minor Practicks’ containing, as Appendix I, the `Account of all the Religious Houses that were in Scotland at the time of the Reformation` by John Spottiswoode of Spottiswoode, Keeper of the Advocates` Library (folio 32). Interspersed with these pages, which contain Hutton`s signature, dated 1784 at page 411 (folio 32) and numerous marginalia throughout, are leaves containing notes, consisting almost entirely of relevant extracts from printed works; further extracts, relating mostly to the dioceses and their leading churchmen are placed after the printed pages (folio 172). At the end (folio 217) are some unrelated leaves formerly loosely enclosed in some of the notebooks and sketchbooks.
