Morton chartulary, a register of the writs of the Douglases of Lochleven, Earls of Morton., 14th century.

 Item
Identifier: MS.72

Scope and Contents

The chartulary contains some 300 charters, most of which are printed in 'Registrum Honoris de Morton' (Bannatyne Club, 1853), volume ii. At the date of that publication, the register, 'probably the oldest Chartulary of lay possessions in Scotland', consisted of two separate parts, one of which, written about the middle of the 14th century, contained 40 leaves of vellum, and the other, written somewhat later but before the end of the century, 91 written leaves of vellum. This later portion included a second table of contents of more modern writing than the original one, and a fasciculus of twelve leaves of a handwriting of the following century. All the contents-lists of both parts mentioned more charters than are actually preserved - 'Registrum Honoris de Morton' (Bannatyne Club, 1853), volume i, page 1 and note.

About 1857 the leaves of the two parts were mounted in one guard-book.
