Clinton, Charles John Fynes.

Letter, 7 April 1854, of Charles Clinton to John Murray III. Clinton enquires whether Murray is willing to publish the literary journal of his late brother, Henry Fynes Clinton, the chronologist, and on what terms. Folios 1-2.

Clinton, Edward Pelham-

Letters, 1892-1900, of Edward Pelham-Clinton to John Murray IV to Hallam Murray. The letters concern the preparation of a life of Pelham-Clinton’s father, Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, Fifth Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Edward Pelham-Clinton had hoped that the life would show his father’s actions as Secretary of State for War during the Crimean War more sympathetically. The memoir was undertaken first by Henry Carlisle, but this was considered by John Murray IV’s advisors to be too favourable to the Duke, and was not published. The work was continued and revised by John Martineau. Such was the difference between Martineau’s assessment of the Duke’s failings, based on the available papers, as Secretary of State for War, and Edward Pelham-Clinton’s intentions towards the memory of his father that the memoir was held from publication until after Pelham-Clinton’s death.
