Letter, 1902, of E.T. Frere to John Murray IV concerning the fourth volume of “The works of Lord Byron”. Folios 10-11.



Frere, G.

Postcard, 7 May 1904, of G. Frere, 24 Steeles Road, London to “Mr Murray”. The Post Office London Directory, 1904, gives “Miss Frere” as the sole occupant. This was with the letters of Georgina Frere (below), but the hand differs from hers enough to suggest a different Frere. Folio 12.

Frere, Georgina H.C.

Letters, 1872, 1893-1896 and undated, of Georgina Frere to John Murray III, John Murray IV and Hallam Murray. They mostly concern the preparation of John Martineau’s biography of Georgina’s father, Henry Frere: “The life and correspondence of Sir Bartle Frere, Bart., G.C.B., F.R.S.” (1895). Folios 17-39.

Frere, Henry Bartle Edward.

Letters, 1857-1883, of Henry Frere to John Murray III. The letters concern various events and interests, including: the Abyssinian Expedition of 1868; the publication of Mary Frere’s “Old Deccan days”; the publication of Henry Frere’s essay, “Indian missions”, and of his article, “The Turkish Empire”, for the “Quarterly Review” of October 1876. Also mentioned is his time in South Africa.

Letters, 1813, 1816, 1818 and undated, of John Hookham Frere to John Murray II. Most are dated 1818 and probably concern the publication that year of cantos three and four of Frere’s “Whistlecraft”. Folios 79-97.

Letters, 1896, 1917 and undated, of Lily Frere to John Murray IV and Hallam Murray. Folios 98-103.

Frere, Mary (d 1864).

Letters, 1849 and 1850, of Mary Frere to John Murray III. They probably concern the copyright of the fifth volume, edited by Mary’s late husband, William, of the “Original letters written during the reigns of Henry VI. Edward IV. and Richard III. by various persons of rank or consequence [of the Paston family]” (1787-1789 - G.G.J. and J. Robinson; 1823 - John Murray). Folios 104-106.
