Frere, Philip Howard.

Letters, 1865, of Philip Frere to John Murray III. They concern the death of Frere’s mother, Mary (d 1864), and the copyright of the fifth volume, edited by his father, William, of the five volume work, “Original letters written during the reigns of Henry VI. Edward IV. and Richard III. by various persons of rank or consequence [of the Paston family]” (1787-1789 - G.G.J. and J. Robinson; 1823 - John Murray). Folios 1-4.

Frere, Walter Howard.

Letters, 1899-1910, of Walter Frere to John Murray IV. They mostly concern Frere’s observations on, and suggestions for, publications on church history.

Folios 11-12. Wet-press copy of a letter, 26 July 1905, of John Murray IV to Walter Frere concerning Frere’s proposal for a new edition of Daniel Rock’s “The church of our fathers”. With the letter is a report (folios 13-15) on “The church of our fathers” by one of Murray’s scholarly advisors, “FR”.

Frere, William.

Letters, 1821, of William Frere to John Murray II. They concern the publication of the fifth volume, of which Frere was the editor, of “Original letters written during the reigns of Henry VI. Edward IV. and Richard III. by various persons of rank or consequence [of the Paston family]” (1787-1789 - G.G.J. and J. Robinson; 1823 - John Murray). Folios 22-29.

Freshfield, Douglas William

Letters, 1878-1911, of Douglas Freshfield to John Murray III, to John Murray IV and Hallam Murray. They mostly concern the preparation and publication of Freshfield’s revisions of “A handbook for travellers in Switzerland and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont”. Freshfield also mentions “grappling” with a life of Horace Benedict de Saussure, subsequently published by Edward Arnold as “The life of Horace Benedict de Saussure” (1920).
