Scope and Contents

The letters appear to be to John Murray IV and Hallam Murray. They concern the preparation and publication of various works by George Smith, including:

“Bishop Heber, poet and chief missionary to the East, second Lord Bishop of Calcutta, 1783-1826” (1895);

“Twelve Indian statesmen” (1897); and, edited by Smith,

“Physician and friend: Alexander Grant, F.R.C.S.” (1902).

The letters are arranged chronologically.

Cabinet photograph, circa 1897, of a portrait of Charles Grant by Henry Raeburn. The photographic copy of the portrait was made by D. Whyte, of Inverness. A woodcut of the Raeburn portrait was used as the frontispiece to Smith’s “Twelve Indian statesmen” (1897).
