Papers of and concerning George Borrow., 1840-1865, 1951.

 Sub-Series
Identifier: MSS.42041-42043

Scope and Contents

George Henry Borrow was a writer and traveller, who published works about his travels through John Murray. There are many letters of George Borrow to both John Murray [II] and John Murray [III] in this series. In addition, there are some letters of the wife of George Borrow, Mary, to John Murray [III] and Robert Francis Cooke. There is a bound volume containing letters, as well as a folder of loose letters. The letters largely concern the publications of George Borrow, including 'The Bible in Spain', and 'The Zincali'.

At the end of the sequences of letters, there is also some miscellaneous material relating to George Borrow, including a manuscript inventory of the letters of Borrow to Murray and a Christmas card from 1951 that was sent by John Murray and featured a picture of George Borrow.

In addition, there is an incomplete manuscript of a 'Gypsy Ballad', which would feature in 'The Zincali' by George Borrow. This manuscript varies slightly from the published version.
