Scope and Contents

Novelist Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) published stories for children, educational works, novels and a memoir of her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth. John Murray was one of her publishers and they had many mutual acquaintances, including Walter Scott. The papers here include letters of Edgeworth to John Murray; papers relating to 'Lost letters of Maria Edgeworth and Lady Romilly' with an offprint of a 20th century article relating to Edgeworth; and a manuscript of a story by Edgeworth entitled 'Pretty Bob!' The latter is for a work that was later published by Murray in 1832 as 'Poor Bob, the chimney sweeper'.
