Letters of Ugo Foscolo to John Murray II., 1817-1824.
Scope and Contents
Italian patriot and poet Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827) arrived in England in 1816 and quickly became part of a large literary circle. This included the publisher, John Murray [II]. Foscolo wrote some articles for the 'Quarterly Review' as well as other periodicals to help relieve his financial woes.
There are here over 40 letters of Foscolo to Murray, which discuss his works, reviews, politics and personal circumstances. In addition, there is mention of mutual acquaintances, such as Lady Caroline Lamb, and discussion of other publications, including the novels of Walter Scott.
There is also a bound volume of marked proofs for an article by Foscolo, 'The court of beasts'. There are annotations on the proofs in the hand of Foscolo.
