Scope and Contents
Sara and Benjamin Austen had a large circle of friends and acquaintances. The letters in this sequence demonstrate their wide ranging circle, which included diplomats, novelists and army officers. The letters here give an indication of the relationships of both Sara and Benjamin Austen with their friends and their influence. Many of the people represented in this sequence, wrote to the Austens over a number of years and the development of their relationships can be traced through the letters.
