Scope and Contents
This series is of the correspondence and papers, including some manuscripts, of many of the most prominent authors published by John Murray, publishers. The papers represent the relationship between author and publisher. There are particularly significant holdings relating to Isabella Bishop (Isabella Bird), George Crabbe, Charles Darwin, Sir Charles and Elizabeth Eastlake, Richard Ford, John Franklin, William Gladstone, Sir Francis Head, Sir Austen Henry Layard, David Livingstone, Thomas Moore, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Southey and Sir William Smith.
In this series too are papers relating to editors of the 'Quarterly Review', including John Wilson Croker, Whitwell Elwin, John Gibson Lockhart and George Prothero. Other publishing ventures are also represented, such as the ‘Handbooks for Travellers’ series, the ‘Family Library’ and 'The Representative' newspaper.
