Six sets of typescript case notes, 1940-1941, some carbon copy, five by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn, one by Lieutenant N Copeland, of service personnel receiving treatment at Carstairs Hospital. Several of the case notes were used in the formulation of the early versions (below) of Fairbairn’s article, ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’. The cases notes are arranged alphabetically by subject surname. Folios 1-13.

Miscellaneous note, 1941, in the hand of William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn concerning separation anxiety. Folio 14.

Manuscript extract, ?1941, of Lewis Fry Richardson from his work, ‘Mathematical Psychology of War’ (1919). The extract, a poem, is headed ‘Mood of French soldiers in 1918’. Richardson sent the extract with his compliments to William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn. Folio 15.

Typescripts of ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn.

Amended, incomplete typescript, 1943, of the original version (see folio 133 recto) of an article, ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn. The typescript, amended by Fairbairn, wants original folios 13-18 and 31. Folios 16-48.

Complete, amended carbon copy of the original version (see above) of the article, ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn. The carbon copy has been amended by Fairbairn. Folios 49-88.

Amended typescripts, some carbon copy, 1943, of original folios 19-20 of a revised version of the article, ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn. The typescripts have been amended by Fairbairn. Folios 89-93.



Amended, revised, complete carbon copy, 1943, of the typescript of the second version (see folio 139 recto) of the article ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn. The typescript has been amended by Fairbairn. Folios 94-129.

Amended carbon copy, 1943, of the typescript of the article, ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn. This is the shorter version of the article prepared for publication in the ‘British Medical Journal’ (see folio 162 recto). The minor amendments were probably made by Fairbairn. Folios 130-147.

Concerning the response to Fairbairn’s published article , ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’.

Manuscript, rough draft of a letter, 1943, of William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn, probably to the Editor of the ‘British Medical Journal’, concerning comments made by Sir Arthur Hurst on Fairbairn’s article, ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, published in the ‘British Medical Journal’, 13 February 1943. Folios 148-149.

Amended carbon copy of the typescript, 1943, of original folios 19-20 of a revised version of the article, ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, by William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn. These copies, amended by Fairbairn, match those of folios 89-93, above. Fairbairn would appear to have used these copies when considering his letter to the Editor of the ‘British Medical Journal’ (folios 148-149). Folios 150-151.

Carbon copy of a letter, 1943, of William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn to ‘The Editor, The British Medical Journal’. The letter was written in response to criticism made by Sir Arthur Hurst of Fairbairn’s article ‘The War Neuroses - their Nature and Significance’, published in the ‘British Medical Journal’, 13 February 1943. Folios 152-153.
