Scope and Contents

The author or authors may have some connexion with Professor John Goodsir, who came from Anstruther (cf. folios 1-47) and attended Dr Robert Knox’s anatomy classes (cf. folio 48).

The contents are as follows.

(i) ‘Linked memories’, being reminiscences of Anstruther and Pittenweem, written in 1884. They contain information about local events and personalities of the early 19th century. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Letters of James Sanson, seaman aboard H M S Alfred, addressed to Robert Beattie, tailor, Anstruther, concerning prize-money, etc., 1780-[?1781] (Folio 44.)

(iii) “'The Pall Mall Gazette' and Mr R Louis Stevenson’s ‘Body Snatcher’”, 1885. The writer, provoked by an article, "Key to Mr Stevenson’s ‘Body Snatcher’" in the 'Pall Mall Gazette' of February 1885, criticizes Stevenson for being unjust to Dr Knox, and especially to his assistants, in the story, which appeared in a Christmas extra issue in 1884 (Folio 48.)

(iv) "The Lakes Fisheries [Gipps Land, Victoria, Australia] and the ‘Closed Grounds’ Question by Chrysophrys” (Folio 68.)

(v) Description of a visit (in connexion with the International Fisheries Exhibition, Edinburgh, 1882) to the Howietoun Fishery, near Stirling, intended for the readers of the 'Australian', a Brisbane newspaper. Signed ‘G’ (Folio 86.)
