Scope and Contents
The volume contains 'Verces writen by sundrie hands' according to a note, 1655, of Sir William Drummond (folio 1). In addition to the poems of William Fowler, which are the majority, and some addressed to him, which are printed with his ‘Works’ (1914), the volume contains “Earle of Ancram's Psalmes”, in the poet William Drummond's hand (folio 50); Fowler's translation of Machiavelli's dedication of the Prince, with a draft of Fowler's dedication to the Laird of Buccleuch (folio 147); and poems in various languages by James VI (folios 2, 41), Professor John Ray (folios 3, 91), John Skynner (folio 7), Thomas Cargill (folio 37), Sir George Raethe, with letter, 1618 (folio 42), and Walter Quin, 1603 (folios 44-47), besides many anonymous.
