Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Letter, attributed to circa 1590, of John Gordoun to Patrick Bruce, Leith, with a modem transcript. ‘Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland’, volume v, page 11. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Eighteenth-century copy of Sir Thomas Wortley's inscription at Wharncliffe, 1510. (Folio 4.)

(iii) Letter, 31 August 1582, signed by several of the Ruthven Raiders, to John Erskine of Dun, summoning him to Stirling. Smellie, William, ‘Account of the Institution and Progress of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland’ (Edinburgh, 1782), page 45. (Folio 5.)

(iv) 'The forme and maner of the Kingis Coronatioune and rittes to be observit thairin from other lyk solemnities knowne to have bein usit aither in this kingdome or by uther great princes abroad', seventeenth century. The order for the coronation of Charles (probably Charles I) as King of Scotland, corresponding almost exactly to the ceremonies actually observed at the coronation of Charles I in Edinburgh in 1633 (see ‘Book of the Old Edinburgh Club’, volume xviii, 1932, pages 12-23). (v) Copy of a letter, 26 June 1649, of the Scottish Parliament to the English, proposing Commissioners to discuss complaints. (Folio 10.)

(vi) Letter, 1677, of John Govan, afterwards Minister of Campsie, to his mother, written in Stirling Tolbooth. For an account of Govan, see MS.2094, folio ii, pages 12-25. (Folio 12.)

(vii) Letter, 1679, of Henry Guy, Secretary to the Treasury, to Sir Robert Howard, Auditor of the Exchequer, regarding payments to the Navy and to Pepys for the service of Tangier; bound with a letter, 1698, to Patrick Craw of Haughhead, with a cure for a scabbed horse. (Folio 13.)

(viii) Letter, 1681, of William Law, Edinburgh, to the Earl of Argyll. (Folio 16.)

(ix) 'Rolls of Parliament [of Scotland] called the eighteenth Aprile 1693'. (Folio 17.)

(x) “The Croun's last speech, 26 March 1707, when lodged in the Castle of Edinr after the rising of the Parliament”, a poem supposed to be addressed by the Crown to William Wilson in gratitude for his care of it as Depute-Marischal. (Folio 19.)

(xi) Two Jacobite satirical poems, “A Panegyrick on a Presbeterian Clergman - marching amongst the train'd bands of Edinr on K.G's Birth-day, 28 May, 1725, with his sword, gun, Bible, band &c.” (his name is given as McKewen), and “A Dialogue betwixt G. looking over Lincoln's Steeple and the D---l looking over Bloomsbury steeple at London”, 23 June 1725; also notes from ‘The life of Mary Stewart’, translated by James Freebairn, 1725. Perhaps part of Robert Mylne's collection. (Folio 20.)

(xii) Names of James Rose, 1732, and Elizabeth Scott, with some theological notes in Latin, on the title-page of the ‘New Testament’ (London, 1693). (Folio 22.)

(xiii) Copies of chronograms on the tomb of Duns Scotus in the Minoritenkirche at Cologne and in the Emperor Charles V's birthplace at Ghent, taken by Robert Keith (apparently the future Bishop), in 1712. (Folio 23.)

(xiv) Letter, 1712, of the Earl of Islay (afterwards 3rd Duke of Argyll), stating the 2nd Duke's opinions regarding the Minister of Edinburgh Castle and Presbyterian opposition to the Oath of Allegiance. ‘Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland’, volume xxx, page 250. (Folio 24.)

(xv) Letter, 1763, of Laurence Sterne to M Foley, banker. ‘Archaeologia Scotia’, volume v, appendix, page 53. (Folio 26.)

(xvi) 'List of the Poker Club, 1768', with a note, 1769, of sums paid by the members, etc. A copy is given in the account of the Club in ‘Book of the Old Edinburgh Club’, volume iii (1910), pages 145-154. ‘Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland’, volume vi, page 182. (Folio 28.)

(xvii) Two versions of the inscription on Macduff's Cross, near Newburgh, with a translation, the first version being like that given in James Cunningham, ‘Essay upon the inscription’ (Edinburgh, 1678), the second version and the translation coming closer to those given in Sir Robert Sibbald, ‘History ... of Fife’ (Edinburgh, 1710). Also a copy of the rhyming charter of the lands of Polmood said to have been given by Malcolm Canmore to Norman Hunter in 1057, which the copyist had previously sent to the ‘Weekly Magazine’, volume xxxii (1776), page 175. (xviii) Letter, 1797, of Donald Mackintosh, Edinburgh, to John Mackleish, West Church, regarding the colours carried by 'Sir - Stewart of Garscub Bart.' at the battle of Worcester. (Folio 32.)

(xxiii) Notes by David Laing (incomplete) on Dunbar's poem, 'Aganis Treason. Ane epitaph for Donald Owre'. The substance of them is incorporated in Laing's edition of ‘Dunbar’ (Edinburgh, 1834, 1865), volume ii, pages 315-316. (Folio 42.)

(xxiv) 'A Grand Funeral a hundred years ago', a newspaper article, ?1899, by John R Tod, based on the account for the funeral expenses of the Duchess Dowager of Hamilton in 1790; presented to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland by the author in 1899. (Folio 44.)

(xxv) 'Narrow escape of Sir Patrick Hume of Polwarth, afterwards Lord Marchmont', a brief account, nineteenth century. (Folio 46.)
