Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

The journal covers Sir Thomas Cochrane's service in Barbados and the West Indies, 1807-1810, 1813, 1815, 1821-1824 (MSS.2577-2578, 2583-2589), on the North American Station, 1815 (MS.2584), in Newfoundland, 1825-1833 (MSS.2590-2595), and on the East India Station, 1842-1846 (MSS.2599-2603), besides his life in Great Britain and visits to France, 1824-1825, 1835-1842 (MSS.2590, 2596-2599), Germany, 1836, 1838 (MSS.2597-2598), and Italy, 1839-1840 (MS.2598). It describes the writer's life afloat and ashore, at home and abroad, and gives descriptions of the scenery, social life, and general conditions of the places which he visited, but says little about naval operations. The volumes written in Newfoundland give an account of the country and its agriculture and other occupations and means of communication, with a daily detailed report on the weather. MS.2598 describes the Queen's coronation. The portion kept on the East India Station includes descriptions of life in Hong Kong and of cruises to the Malay mainland, Borneo, Sarawak, the Ryukyu (Loochoo) Island, etc.
