From the Series:
Mary Elizabeth Haldane was a daughter of Richard Burdon Sanderson of West Jesmond, Northumberland, who gave up a promising official career because of his religious convictions. She married Robert Haldane of Cloan, Writer to the Signet, in 1853, as his second wife. Throughout her long life she maintained contact with members of both families at home and abroad.
