Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows:
(i) Verses, 1765-1828, undated, chiefly by members of the Strange family, notably Sir Thomas A Strange, but several pieces have other attributions, including Charles Burney, 1776 (folio 3), John Dunlop, Lord Provost of Glasgow, 1799 (folio 18) and Charles James Fox, statesman, undated (folios 23-24);
(ii) Prose including Sir Robert Strange's autobiography (folio 31) which was published in James Dennistoun's Memoirs; an extract from a letter of Andrew Lumisden to his father, 1750, describing Herculaneum, which was published in full in the Appendix to ‘Remarks on the antiquities of Rome and its environs’ by Lumisden (London, 1797) (folio 59); and a note, undated, by Sir Thomas A Strange on George Keith, Earl Marischal (folio 61);
(iii) An undated study of a head in red chalk by Mary Bruce Strange (folio 72).
