Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Further corrections to MS.2938, to the pages of which reference is made. The corrections are followed in the text printed by the Right Reverend M Russell for the Spottiswoode Society, 1851. (Folio 1.)

(ii) 'The Seventh booke of the History of the Church of Scotland'. Incomplete, ending in a passage relating to the year 1623 (Russell, volume iii, page 267). On folio 10 are the words, '20 Feb., 1635, begann to write this book in Edr.', and the date 16 November 1653. These leaves are not those cut from MS.2938. (Folio 10.)

(iii) 'From the fifth book of the History of the Church of Scotland'. A transcript of Adv.MS.33.4.3, from page 459 to the end, bearing (folio 55) a note in Bishop Robert Keith's hand, 'These sheets are copyed from the MS. book or History of Abp. Spotswood, where it begins to be bad writing, and which MS. History I have gifted to the Advoc. Libr.' See Russell, volume i, pages v-vi). The portion transcribed was afterwards placed by Spottiswoode in his Sixth Book (Russell, volume ii, page 378, to volume iii, page 103). (Folio 55.)
