Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows:

(i) Legal print, circa 1692: "The particular debts wherein the deceased Earl of Tweeddale was engaged for Charles Earl of Dunfermline, and which John, now Earl of Tweeddale, present Lord Chancellor, was obliged and necessitat to pay for preventing the ruine of his own family, and fortune: with a distinct account what thereof was payed by intromission with the rents of Dunfermline’s estate, or by the sale of lands or otherwayes; and how much balance is yet resting to this Earl of Tweeddale of these debts" (folio 1);

(ii) Accounts and inventories of debts, 1644-1681, undated (folio 3);

(iii) Note, circa 1650, of the Earl of Dunfermline's horses with their prices (folio 102);

(iv) Bonds and discharges, 1639-1649, of and to the Earl of Dunfermline (folio 104);

(v) Papers, circa 1647-1654, including many in the hand of the 1st Marquess of Tweeddale, reviewing the 1st Earl of Tweeddale's financial situation as a result of his cautionry for the Earl of Dunfermline (folio 132).
