Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Original correspondence of John Leyden with his family and his friends in Scotland and in India, 1794-1811. The fragment of a journal of a tour in Cumberland in 1801 (folio 27) is printed by James Sinton in 'Transactions of the Hawick Archaeological Society’, 1906. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Undated writings of Leyden: legend of Duke Richard; part of a sermon; poem, 'To J.B. from J.L.'; part of ‘Scenes of Infancy’ (verse and notes). (Folio 149.)

(iii) Undated letters to Leyden from his Indian correspondents. (Folio 201.)

(iv) Copies by Robert Leyden of letters of John Leyden to his parents, the originals of which are in this volume. (Folio 217.)

(v) Copies of letters of Leyden to William Erskine and Stamford Raffles, the originals of which are in MS.971. (Folio 226.)

(vi) Copies by Robert Leyden of two letters of Leyden to Dr James Hare, Calcutta, the originals of which are in MS. 971, and of a letter of Stamford Raffles, perhaps also to Hare, announcing Leyden's death, 1811. (Folio 293.)
