Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Letter, 1782, of Hugh Blair, perhaps to the publisher W Strahan, apparently on the publication of his ‘Lectures’ (London, 1783), and the exclusion therefrom of his ‘Critical dissertation on the poems of Ossian’ (London, 1765). (Folio 1.)

(ii) Letter, 1787, of Blair to Robert Burns, containing a reference to Blair's part in the publication of Ossian; written in reply to the letter of Burns announcing his departure from Edinburgh (number 101 in De Lancey Ferguson's edition); from the collection of Alfred Morrison. Printed in Wallace's revision of Chambers' ‘Life and works of Robert Burns’ (Edinburgh, 1896), volume ii, pages 97-98. (Folio 3.)

(iii) Letter, 1804, of George Chalmers to James Macpherson, probably son of the compiler of Ossian, referring to his correspondent's 'right to Ossian'. (Folio 5.)

(iv) Dugald Buchanan's poem 'An Gaisgeach' ('The Hero'), with an English verse translation by Murdo McLenan. (Folio 7.)
