Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

The subject-matter of the letters is mainly domestic, but several deal with politics and the Bar. Others relate to Sir Walter Scott, John Gibson Lockhart, the Beacon, and the Sentinel, 1821-1822; a Continental tour, 1823; Chambers’ ‘Life of Scott’, 1833; an agitation of Edinburgh students, 1838; and military service in the Crimea, 1855-1856, and India (including the Mutiny), 1849-1869.

The chief correspondents are Sir Charles Bell, the surgeon, Lord Cockburn, and Sir Walter Scott. Poems written by the Richardsons and by Cockburn are attached to letters or collected in MS.3991.
