Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

As far as 1779 letters are sparse. From 1780 to 1806, the correspondence is of Lord Milton's second and youngest sons, Henry (General, Colonel of the 35th Regiment; of Boquhan, with the surname Campbell, 1776-1779; of Saltoun, 1779-1803) and John (General, Lieutenant-Colonel of the 32nd and Colonel of the 91st Regiments; of Boquhan, with the surname Fletcher-Campbell, 1779-1803; of Saltoun, 1803-1806), and treats mainly of family, estate, and regimental matters; noteworthy correspondents are Adam Ferguson and John Home (who at one point bring in politics and James Macpherson); the past intrudes with an enquiry into Lord Milton's accounts of 1745-1746. Then there are letters, 1820-1878, of John's son Andrew, and more to his wife, Lady Charlotte, including a series from C K Sharpe. Finally there are letters, 1900-1905, to their grandson, Andrew, mostly concerning cars, motor racing, and financial affairs.
