Scope and Contents

The manuscript was written about 1500. Section xxii is an addition of the mid-sixteenth century.

The scribe gives his initials D (or David) de B in explicits on folios 14, 52, and 57, and writes his name out 'David Baldovy' on a stub after folio 202.

The contents are as follows: (i) 'Ad componendum cartas'. (Folio 1.)

(ii) 'Exceptiones contra cartam. (Folio 1 verso.)

(iii) 'Expositiones quorundam vocabulorum'. (Folio 2.)

(iv) 'Regiam Maiestatem' in 3 parts of 35, 109, and 66 chapters (those of part 2 are not numbered in the text; the table has 34 and 69 in parts 1 and 3) with table at the beginning. Between the table and the text are 11 verses beginning 'Hie trahit ad lumen antiqua statuta volumen' (‘Acts of the Parliament of Scotland’, i, page xv). ‘Acts of the Parliament of Scotland’, i, pages 233-277. Paper (watermarks: gatherings 1-13, gothic P in two sizes, type Piccard iv III 1-145, Low Countries, later 15th century; gatherings 14-15, gothic P with flower above, type Piccard iv VII 131, and what follows, Low Countries, late 15th century; gatherings 16-22, unicorn, similar to Piccard x 2211, Lüttich, 1494; gatherings 23-24, pot, not in Briquet).

The lower pastedown is from a work on penance, 15th century, vellum, 2 columns, more than 42 lines, more than 280 x 190 millimetres, size of column more than 220 x 80 millimetres.

Collation: 1- 14¹², 5¹⁰, 6¹² (-1,2,3,7), 7-10¹², -11¹⁰ (the catchword ignores this loss), 12-13¹², 14¹² (-1), 15¹², 16¹² (-12), 17¹² (-11), 18¹⁰, 19¹⁰ (-10), 20¹⁶ (-16), 21-2¹², 23¹⁰, 24⁸, -25⁶, 1 leaf. No signatures. Catchwords on last verso of gatherings 1-3, 7-12, 14, 18, and 21, in the lower right-hand margin, parallel to the text. Ruling in ink. One column. 35-37 lines (in gathering 15 up to 45).

Custodial History

There are at least three sixteenth-century owners' names: John Drummond in P...ertoune (folio 115, under Fraser; possibly folio 3, under Arbuthnott), Mr George Fraser in Da..furd (folio 1, under Arbuthnott; folio 115, over Drummond; cf. MS.16498), and Alexander Arbuthnott, Principal of King's College, Aberdeen (folios 1, 3).

At the foot of the spine is a lozenge-shaped label with the number 586.

Physical Description

Paper and vellum. Binding of oak boards, covered in brown leather, tooled blind (repaired), with clasp, 16th century.
