Scope and Contents

After reputedly escaping, wounded, from Culloden, James Seton saw military service as an ensign in the Netherlands being present at the siege of Bergen-op-Zoom. On his return to Britain he served with the 105th Foot and later in Ireland as a Lieutenant with the 54th Foot.

The contents are as follows:

(i) Letters of appointment and commissions, 1759-1771, (folio 1);

(ii) Passports, 1747, 1749, 1763 (folio 9);

(iii) Accounts of the 54th Foot kept by James Seton, 1773 (folio 13);

(iv) Correspondence, 1772 (folio 19);

(v) Muster Rolls, circa 1750, 1763, 1772 (folio 36);

(vi) Battle formations for armies in the Netherlands, 1747, undated (folio 40);

(vii) Military maps of Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal and of Northern Europe, 1753, 1813-1814 (folio 43).
